Flyers claim a forward who Tortorella knows pretty well

For added depth up front, the Flyers on Wednesday acquired a forward who John Tortorella is familiar with from his days in Columbus.

The club claimed Lukas Sedlak off of waivers from the Avalanche. The 29-year-old played for Tortorella's Blue Jackets from 2016-17 to 2018-19.

After going to the KHL for the past three seasons, Sedlak returned to the NHL in the summer when he signed a one-year, $800,000 deal with the Avalanche. In three games for Colorado, Sedlak played 7:42 minutes per game, had five blocked shots, four hits and went scoreless with one shot.

His best NHL season came in his 2016-17 rookie year with Tortorella. The Czech Republic native had seven goals, six assists and a plus-10 mark in 62 games for a Blue Jackets team that went 50-24-8.

Sedlak (6-0/205) is regarded for his positional versatility, being able to play center or winger. Tortorella has stressed the importance of that to a coach.

To make room for Sedlak on the roster, the Flyers loaned Olle Lycksell back to AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley.

Given he was just claimed this afternoon, don't expect to see Sedlak in the lineup tonight as the 3-0-0 Flyers visit the Panthers (7:30 p.m. ET/TNT). It's possible the Flyers give him his first look Saturday against the Predators in Nashville, Tennessee (8 p.m. ET/NBCSP+).
