In a season full of change and turnover, Claude Giroux has been a constant.
The Flyers' captain was rewarded Wednesday by being named to the Metropolitan Division team for the 2019 NHL All-Star Game held Jan. 26 in San Jose, California.
The honor marks Giroux's sixth All-Star appearance and is another notch to his impressive resurgence as he's entered his 30s. Giroux, hands down, has been the Flyers' best and most consistent player this season with 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) in 39 games. He's projected to finish with 93 points.
Last year, Giroux went off for franchise history, becoming just the sixth-ever Flyer to score 100-plus points in a season and the first to do so since Eric Lindros in 1995-96. At 30 years old, Giroux emphatically set career highs in goals (34), assists (68), points (102) and plus-minus (plus-28). Remarkably, it came after he endured one of his career-worst seasons in 2016-17: 14 goals, 44 assists, 58 points and a minus-15 rating.
Giroux turns 31 on Jan. 12 and is still finding another gear. He hasn't missed a game since the 2015-16 season and made some changes to his offseason training regimen prior to the breakout year in 2017-18, proving a lot of people wrong.
"He's not on the decline. I know this: I'll be shocked next year if you guys don't ask me in January, 'Well, how has G turned this around?'" former general manager Ron Hextall said in April 2017. "He's a very driven athlete, he's very driven. I know he's going to train hard this year. We're going to make some minor tweaks in how he trains. He trains hard."
The adjustments have paid off as Giroux is an All-Star yet again, a needed positive to the Flyers' 2018-19 season.
