Furthering his legacy in Philly, Giroux earns 7th All-Star bid

Flyers

Claude Giroux played his first game with the Flyers as a 20-year-old.

Now, at 34 years old and continuing to cement his legacy as an all-time great Flyer, Giroux is headed to his seventh All-Star Game.

On Thursday night, the Flyers' captain was named the club's 2022 All-Star representative.

Giroux leads the Flyers in scoring, entering Thursday with 29 points (11 goals, 18 assists) through 32 games. He's the city's longest-tenured active athlete, going back to 2008 before the Phillies won the World Series that fall. Giroux is in the final year of an eight-year, $66.2 million deal.

He has delivered so far in his contract year, but the Flyers came into Thursday's matchup with the Bruins at 13-15-7 overall.

Giroux's consistency and durability have been impressive. He has gotten better in his 30s.

Over the last 13 seasons, Giroux is the only NHL player to rank among the top five in both games played and points.

"He's continued to push and just his longevity is super impressive, especially to play in one city, one organization your whole career — that doesn't happen too often," James van Riemsdyk said last month. "For him to be able to do that, in a place like this, a pretty storied franchise, it's pretty cool to see him climb the ranks for all these different milestones that he seems to be passing in the last couple of years."

The 2022 All-Star festivities are Feb. 4-5 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Here is the Metropolitan Division All-Star roster:

  • Sebastian Aho, Hurricanes (second)
  • Claude Giroux, Flyers (seventh)

  • Alex Ovechkin, Capitals (eighth; Metropolitan Division captain)
