Just as they get Hayes back, Flyers have key forward leave game with injury

The hits keep on coming for the Flyers.

Joel Farabee was forced to leave Wednesday night's game against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden during the first period with an upper-body injury.

About eight and a half minutes into the game, Farabee lost his skating edge and slammed into the boards as he took out the legs of Rangers defenseman K'Andre Miller. The 21-year-old winger skated off the ice hunched over and under the watch of Flyers director of medical services Jim McCrossin.

Farabee went out for another shift but once the Flyers cleared the defensive zone, he went directly back toward the bench and eventually made his way to the dressing room for further evaluation. He did not return to the game.

After the Flyers' 4-1 loss, head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters in New York that Farabee would be reevaluated Thursday.

Through 21 games, the Flyers have been stricken by numerous injuries. They entered Wednesday night's game without Ryan Ellis (lower body), Derick Brassard (lower body), Nate Thompson (shoulder) and Patrick Brown (thumb). They saw the return of Kevin Hayes, who missed 18 of the Flyers' first 20 games because of an abdominal injury.

Vigneault's team can't afford more losses on the health front. The Flyers are having a nightmarish time trying to stay afloat. They went to New York with an 8-8-4 record and six-game losing streak. They've also been starving for offense, scoring only 1.71 goals per game since Oct. 30.

Farabee had a goal in each of his past three games and has seven on the season, along with three assists. He was skating on the Flyers' first line Wednesday night and led the club in goals last season with 20.

Update: Desperate for offense and a win, Flyers must find a way without Farabee
