Flyers lose the rights to a pair of prospects

The Flyers on Tuesday lost the rights to Egor Serdyuk and Roddy Ross, a pair of 2019 sixth-round draft picks.

As a result of the Flyers opting to not sign either prospect before Tuesday's 5 p.m. ET deadline, both Serdyuk and Ross have become draft-related unrestricted free agents.

Serdyuk, a winger who turns 20 years old on Thursday, saw his production drop off over the last two seasons with the QMJHL's Victoriaville Tigres. During his draft year in 2018-19, the Russian native led all QMJHL rookies with 65 points (25 goals, 40 assists) through 63 games.

"He needs to get stronger, he's going to have to learn to play away from the puck," Flyers assistant general manager Brent Flahr said in June 2019 after the draft, "but you can't teach his offensive tools."

The following season, Serdyuk scored 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 50 games. This past season, which was severely shortened by COVID-19, Serdyuk had 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) in 26 games before putting up five points (three goals, two assists) over 14 playoff games.

Just last month, the Flyers signed one of their QMJHL winger prospects. Elliot Desnoyers, a 2020 fifth-round pick, inked his entry-level contract after breaking out for 49 points (21 goals, 28 assists) in 37 games with the Halifax Mooseheads. In that same 2020 draft, the Flyers also took wingers Tyson Foerster (first round)Zayde Wisdom (fourth round) and Connor McClennon (sixth round). Foerster and Wisdom signed their ELCs last October.

Ross, a goalie who turns 21 years old in July, went 6-8-2 with a 3.75 goals-against average and .874 save percentage for the WHL's Regina Pats this season. Amateur scout Mark Greig, who sees a lot of the WHL, and goaltender development coach Brady Robinson lobbied for Ross in the 2019 draft.

During his draft year, Ross played for the Seattle Thunderbirds, finishing 16-5-3 with a 2.76 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. The 6-foot-3, 184-pounder was the 17th-ranked goalie by NHL Central Scouting going into the draft.

"He's a guy that came on the scene late," Flahr said after the 2019 draft. "He's a big kid, he's got to grow into his body. He played very well down the stretch on an average team where he faced a lot of shots."

The next season, Ross went 20-21-7 with a 3.17 goals-against average and .908 save percentage for the Thunderbirds before being traded to the Pats in April 2020.

In their system, the Flyers currently have netminders Alex Lyon (pending unrestricted free agent), Felix Sandstrom (pending restricted free agent), Kirill Ustimenko (signed 2017 third-round pick), Samuel Ersson (unsigned 2018 fifth-round pick), Ivan Fedotov (unsigned 2015 seventh-round pick) and Matej Tomek (unsigned 2015 third-round pick).
