Flyers sign intriguing center prospect to entry-level deal

Jon-Randall Avon said he wanted to parlay his camp invite with the Flyers into an entry-level contract.

He accomplished his goal.

The Flyers on Wednesday signed the 18-year-old center to a three-year entry-level deal. Avon competed at the Flyers' development and rookie camps from late August into September. The prospect's 2020-21 OHL season was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic and he then went undrafted this summer.

Avon will be in Flyers training camp, which kicks off Thursday, on an amateur tryout.

During the development and rookie camps, Avon stood out in flashes with bursts of playmaking ability.

"I've got a lot of speed, I can make plays," Avon said last week, "so I just want to show that I can play in the NHL."

In 2021-22, the Flyers will have two prospects playing for the OHL's Peterborough Petes with Avon and 2021 fourth-round pick Brian Zanetti.

"It's been an amazing experience," Avon said at Flyers rookie camp. "A lot of the older guys have been taking me under their wing, the coaches have been great. Everything has been awesome so far.

"They go hard. They go really hard. Every day we go hard to the whistle and it's been great."
