The Flyers have found their right-handed defenseman.
Christian Folin, a 27-year-old Swede, signed a one-year deal with the club Thursday.
The four-year pro (6-foot-3, 204 pounds) had spent parts of three seasons with the Wild before appearing in 65 games with the Kings in 2017-18, when he potted three goals and 13 points and was a plus-1 in 15:35 of ice time per game. In the playoffs, Folin was a minus-4 as the Kings were swept by the Golden Knights in the opening round.
Folin led the Kings in hits per game (2.6) and overall hits (167), so Robert Hagg will now have some competition in that department.
Before the draft, general manager Ron Hextall stressed the need to add a right-handed shot to the blue line, whether through the draft or free agency. Before the signing, Radko Gudas was the Flyers' only right-handed D-man.
“Yeah, me and 30 other GMs,” Hextall said of the need for a right-handed defenseman. “When you look at the hockey world, it’s a weakness in the whole chink of armor there, so, yeah, we’d love to have one.”
Folin fills that need, even if he is likely just a seventh-defenseman, depth signing.
