Flyers release injury updates on Morin, Allison and camp roster, schedule

Flyers training camp will officially arrive Thursday with the club's first on-ice practice.

Wade Allison and Samuel Morin will not be participants as both are set to miss time because of recent injuries.

Allison is out indefinitely after suffering a right ankle sprain in last Sunday's rookie game.

"He's going to be out for a while," Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault said Tuesday. "I don't have an exact timeframe, but anytime they call something undetermined amount of time, that means it's going to be a long time."

It's another tough break for Allison, who had ankle surgery in January at the beginning of last season. When healthy at the end of last season, the soon-to-be 24-year-old winger impressed in his 14-game audition and set himself up to compete for a spot in the club's 2021-22 season-opening lineup.

Morin is dealing with some more issues to his right knee. He'll miss six to eight weeks after undergoing a procedure on Sept. 10 to remove loose bodies from the knee. The 26-year-old defenseman has endured two torn ACLs in his right knee since May 2018, both occurring in a span of 19 months. Last season, the happy-go-lucky Morin played a career-high 20 games before signing a one-year, $750,000 contract extension in July.

When healthy, Morin is expected to compete for playing time in the Flyers' experienced defensive group and could be the club's seventh defenseman.

Allison, a right winger, would have been competing with Nicolas Aube-Kubel and others for a bottom-six job.

"We've got Joel Farabee that can play the right side, we've got JVR that can play the right side, we've got a lot of options," Vigneault said. "I'm expecting more this year from Ku. I met with him I think two days ago, he had a real good summer, he feels real positive, real good. Ku brings a dimension of physicality, he skates hard, he gets in on the forecheck and he creates turnovers.

"Injuries are a part of it — Allison's not there right now, Hayesy's not there, obviously Sam's not there, but you're going to get that throughout the year. You have something to show, show it on the ice, and the coaches and management are going to make the right decisions."

The 2021-22 season is a big one for the Flyers, who are coming off the shortened 2020-21 campaign in which they missed the playoffs and surrendered an NHL-most 3.52 goals per game. General manager Chuck Fletcher had an active and aggressive offseason in revamping the Flyers' roster. The club acquired Ryan Ellis, Cam Atkinson, Rasmus Ristolainen, Keith Yandle, Martin Jones, Derick Brassard and Nate Thompson, while parting ways with Jakub Voracek, Shayne Gostisbehere, Philippe Myers, Nolan Patrick and Robert Hagg.

"At the end of the year, obviously Chuck and I took a couple of weeks to get the emotion out of the equation and analyze our team," Vigneault said. "I believe Chuck said it the best when he said if we want different results, we have to make some adjustments. He went out and he made those adjustments. ... We both agreed that some changes were needed to be made.

"Players that have left our organization were great people, they did what they could for the Flyers' organization, but we felt that there were some changes that we needed to make, to change the team dynamics, to change the personnel on the ice. Chuck went out and he did that.

"I believe right now, everybody, from coaches to players, the veteran Flyer players and the new Flyer players, we all have something prove. Now we need to get to work and get it done."

Other notes

In other training camp roster matters, defenseman Cooper Zech will miss six to eight weeks with an upper-body injury. The prospect suffered the injury in the first rookie game last weekend. Zech signed with the club this offseason and will compete on the Phantoms' blue line.

Prospect Zayde Wisdom (shoulder) is out until December.

The Flyers released Ethan Burroughs and Nolan Ritchie from their amateur tryouts.

Below is the Flyers' 2021 training camp roster and schedule. The club has 58 players in camp.

Fans will be allowed to attend practices at the Flyers Training Center, with masks required. Per usual, admission will be free of charge.
