• The Flyers are off to their best start in the Alain Vigneault era. To begin its road trip, the team handed the Oilers their first loss of the season with a 5-3 victory Wednesday. The next night, the Flyers beat the Canucks, 2-1.

The Flyers are scoring 4.17 goals per game and have five players with three or more: Cam Atkinson (six), Claude Giroux (four), Travis Konecny (three), Joel Farabee (three) and Sean Couturier (three).

The only other NHL team to have five or more players with three or more goals: the 8-0-0 Panthers, who have six.

Meanwhile, the Flames have won five straight games, all on the road. Four of the victories came over Metropolitan Division teams: the Capitals, Penguins, Rangers and Devils.

Calgary is scoring 3.57 goals per game and allowing only 2.14. The Flames have two players with seven goals apiece in Elias Lindholm and Andrew Mangiapane, while Johnny Gaudreau leads them in scoring with 10 points.

• An aspect that shouldn't be overlooked in the Flyers' 4-1-1 start is how the club has opened games.

The Flyers have led at first intermission in five of their six matchups. They're 4-0-1 in those five.

In 56 games last season, the Flyers had only 10 wins when leading at first intermission. They surrendered more goals in the first period (63) than any other team in hockey.

Oftentimes last season, the Flyers didn't give themselves a chance. So far this season, they're playing much better at the start of games and it's showing in the final results.

• Ryan Ellis' status is in doubt for tonight. The top-pair defenseman has missed the last three games with a day-to-day undisclosed injury. He has been considered day to day for over a week.
