Ex-Flyers goalie gets hit with 2-game AHL suspension for a flippin' celebration

Alex Lyon is a pretty smart guy.

He went to Yale and majored in political science. He was an enjoyable and in-depth interview during his time in the Flyers' organization. As we say in this business, he made for good copy.

But this wasn't his smartest move. Or maybe the 29-year-old goalie merely didn't give an iota.

Championship celebrations tend to bring out the best — or the bird.

In Lyon's case, the double bird.

Lyon, now in the Hurricanes' organization, helped lead AHL affiliate Chicago to the Calder Cup title over the weekend. After pitching a 4-0 shutout last Saturday to finish off Springfield in five games, Lyon expressed his joy as his team was about to pose with the Calder Cup.

Here's our suitable-for-work version of Lyon's celebration, which was captured on the television broadcast and then spread through the Twitterverse.

You don't need to go to Yale to decipher what Lyon is doing there.

The former Flyers and Phantoms netminder was hit with a two-game suspension from the AHL on Tuesday.

Kudos to Lyon for his championship run with the Wolves. He was impressive in the playoffs, going 9-3-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. Prior to the 2021-22 campaign, Lyon spent the previous five seasons in Lehigh Valley and had played 22 games for the Flyers over that span.
