Pittsburgh Penguins forward and captain Sidney Crosby underwent wrist surgery and is expected to miss at least six weeks, the team announced on Wednesday.

In a press release, Penguins GM Ron Hextall stated that Crosby had the procedure done on his left wrist and will miss the start of training camp.

“This is not a new injury for Sid. It is something that he has played through for years," Hextall said. "After exhausting all minimally-invasive options and much discussion, it was decided that surgery was in his best interest.”

Crosby is coming off another excellent season with the Penguins. A finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, the 34-year-old had 24 goals and 38 assists in the 2020-21 season. He led the Penguins in points and goals, and was tied for the lead in assists.

Pittsburgh opens up the 2021-22 NHL season on Tuesday, Oct. 12 against the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. That would mean if Crosby is out for six weeks, he would miss the opening week of the season.
