Injury to one of Flyers' top prospects is not serious; could he still debut soon?

After a three-point performance in his fourth game of pro hockey, Cam York missed AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley's 2-1 overtime loss Wednesday to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton because of an injury.

York is dealing with a nagging lower-body issue and is considered day to day, according to a source. The injury is not serious, per the source, but depending on how York feels, the Flyers may keep him out of the Phantoms' games this weekend. Lehigh Valley hosts Binghamton on Saturday and visits Hershey on Sunday.

Following his sophomore season at Michigan, the Flyers' 2019 first-round pick turned pro at the end of March. York was named Big Ten Defenseman of the Year and won a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship as the U.S. captain.

York is one of the Flyers' top prospects and a candidate to make his NHL debut as the club plays out the string on the 2020-21 season. The Flyers have seven games remaining, starting with Thursday night's matchup against the Devils at the Prudential Center (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).

The Flyers have been getting an early peek on a number of prospects and roster candidates for next season. Tanner Laczynski, Wade Allison, Jackson Cates and Egor Zamula have all made their NHL debuts this month.

If the Flyers are able to give York a small taste of the NHL before the offseason, perhaps they'll aim for their regular-season finale on May 10. It's a home game against the Devils and fans would certainly be excited for a glimpse of the point-producing blueliner. It would also be a great way to motivate York even more heading into the offseason.

"He’s a young man that excelled at college and does a lot of things well," Flyers general manager Chuck Fletcher said earlier this month. "For me, it’s just more about getting some playing reps. Really, we need Cam to be a good player for us next year, we want him to challenge and push for a spot on our roster. So, really, the focus right now is just about getting him that opportunity to see for himself how he fits and the areas that he may need to work on and it’ll just be a great learning experience for him.”
