ESTERO, Fla. — Brandon Stone had 17 points off the bench to carry La Salle to a 72-70 win over Wright St. in a semifinal of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Tuesday night.
After La Salle led 70-65 with 2:05 remaining, Wright State rallied with two free throws by Holden and a 3-pointer from Cole Gentry to tie it at 70 with 21 seconds to go.
La Salle played for one shot and Stone missed a 3-pointer with 6 seconds left. But Croswell, who finished with six points, had an offensive rebound and was fouled on his successful putback for a two-point lead with 1 second left. He missed the free throw, and after a timeout, Wright State failed to beat the buzzer.
Scott Spencer had 11 points for La Salle (3-2). David Beatty added 10 points. Christian Ray had six rebounds for the Explorers.
Jaylon Hall had 15 points for the Raiders (5-2). Bill Wampler added 15 points. Tanner Holden had 10 points and six rebounds.
La Salle will play South Alabama in the championship game on Wednesday. Wright State will play Miami (Ohio) for third place.
Isiah Deas had a career-high 31 points as La Salle topped Morgan State 85-68 on Saturday.
David Beatty had 18 points for La Salle (6-3). Sherif Kenney added nine points and seven rebounds. Christian Ray had seven rebounds for the hosts.
Troy Baxter Jr. had 15 points for the Bears (4-8). Stanley Davis added 14 points. Isaiah Burke had 12 points and six rebounds.
La Salle faces Wagner at home on Wednesday. Morgan State plays Chestnut Hill at home on Monday.
David Beatty had 14 points to lead five La Salle players in double figures as the Explorers defeated Drexel 71-63 on Saturday.
Saul Phiri added 12 points for the Explorers, Scott Spencer chipped in 11 with seven rebounds and Ayinde Hikim and Ed Croswell each scored 10
Isiah Deas, the Explorers' second leading scorer heading into the contest at nine points per game, was just 1-of-9 shooting.
Zach Walton had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Dragons (5-5). James Butler added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Camren Wynter had 11 points and six rebounds.
La Salle (5-3) matches up against Morgan State at home next Saturday. Drexel takes on South Florida on the road next Sunday.
