Tony Washington scored a career-high 20 points and pulled down a career-best 14 rebounds as La Salle overcame a slow start to beat George Mason 69-62 on Saturday afternoon to halt a three-game losing skid.
George Mason, looking for its third straight Atlantic 10 Conference victory, shot 62 percent from the floor in the first half, sprinting to a 45-32 halftime advantage.
The Explorers picked up the pace as Washington scored six straight points to open the second half, while George Mason opened that period shooting 2-of-15 from the floor. La Salle opened the second period on a 21-7 surge to take a 53-52 lead with 8:58 remaining in the game.
The Patriots battled back to retake the lead 58-57. Washington pulled down his 13th rebound and followed with a layup at the other end for a 61-60 lead with 1:20 remaining. The Explorers made six straight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Washington was 9 of 11 from the floor. B.J. Johnson added 18 points with nine boards and Amar Stukes had 12 points for La Salle (11-16, 5-9).
Justin Kier led George Mason (12-15, 6-8) with 19 points and seven rebounds.
NEW YORK — Cyril Langevine scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to lead eighth-seeded Rhode Island to a 76-57 win over ninth-seeded La Salle in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on Thursday.
Langevine, who was 9 of 10 from the field and 7 of 10 from the foul line, also grabbed 12 rebounds for the Rams (17-14), who will play top-seeded VCU in the quarterfinals Friday.
The Rams scored the first six points, four by Langevine, and never trailed. It was close through the first 10 minutes but with Langevine scoring eight points, Rhode Island went on a 16-3 run to build a 32-22 lead at the half.
Fatts Russell added 19 points, and Jeff Downtin chipped in with 12.
Saul Phiri led the Explorers (10-21) with 10 points. No other player scored in double figures for La Salle.
Jared Kimbrough had 14 points and eight rebounds as La Salle topped Fordham 72-57 on Saturday.
Pookie Powell had 14 points for La Salle (10-20, 8-10 Atlantic 10 Conference). Saul Phiri added 10 points. Traci Carter had seven assists for the home team.
Chuba Ohams had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams (12-19, 3-15). Jalen Cobb added 10 points. Ty Perry had 10 points.
The Explorers improve to 2-0 against the Rams on the season. La Salle defeated Fordham 73-71 on Jan. 23.
