Jury selection starts in Mike McQueary's defamation suit against Penn State

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- There will be at least one more day of jury selection before trial in a defamation case against Penn State by a former assistant football coach who reported Jerry Sandusky had abused a boy in a team shower.

Ten women and nine men were qualified as potential jurors Monday in Mike McQueary's defamation and whistleblower lawsuit.

The judge wants a pool of 28 before lawyers will pare them down to 12 jurors and four alternates.

Opening statements are scheduled for next week.

McQueary has testified he chanced upon ex-assistant coach Sandusky sexually abusing the boy in 2001. He reported it the next morning to then-head coach Joe Paterno.

University trustees have said Paterno's handling of the complaint contributed to his firing after Sandusky's 2011 arrest. Paterno died in 2012.

Sandusky was convicted but denies molesting boys.
