Penn shuts down Cornell in second half, beats Big Red

AJ Brodeur recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Penn to a 68-50 win over Cornell on Saturday night.

Devon Goodman had 16 points for Penn (16-10, 4-6 Ivy League). Jake Silpe added 12 points. Antonio Woods had 12 points for the hosts.

Penn headed into halftime trailing narrowly, 32-30, but the Quakers were able to outscore the Big Red 38-18 in the second half to pull away for the victory. The Big Red's 18 points in the second half were a season low for the team.

Matt Morgan had 21 points for the Big Red (13-13, 5-5). Josh Warren added seven rebounds and three blocks. Steven Julian had seven rebounds.

The Quakers evened the season series against the Big Red with the win. Cornell defeated Penn 80-71 on Feb. 1. Penn matches up against Harvard on the road on Friday. Cornell matches up against Yale on the road on Friday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Ryan Betley scored 22 points and AJ Brodeur scored 17 with 10 rebounds and underdog Pennsylvania stunned Providence 81-75 on Saturday.

Prior to Saturday, the last time the Quakers (3-2) beat Providence was 66-65 on Jan. 25, 1975 in Providence.

Providence (4-2) led for a scant 1:59 of this one. Eddie Scott's 3-pointer with 17-minutes left in the first half gave Penn a 5-4 lead and they never trailed again. Penn went to the break with a 47-30 lead after shooting 19 of 33 (57.6%), including 7 of 14 3-pointers.

After the break, Nate Wilson's layup made it 58-52 with 8:51 left, but Providence wouldn't get closer until the end. Jordan Dingle's layup with 66 seconds to go put Penn up 77-64.

Maliek White led Providence with 20 points and Alpha Diallo scored 16.

The Friars entered the game with a 6-3 all-time mark against Penn. Before Saturday, Providence had won the last four games between the two, including an 89-52 win in the most recent matchup on Nov. 18, 2004 in Providence. The Friars' record against Ivy League schools is 132-50.

EASTON, Pa. — Justin Jaworski scored 20 points and Isaac Suffren scored a career-high 19 points off the bench and Lafayette beat Pennsylvania 86-75 on Tuesday night.

Kyle Stout's 3-pointer with 16:54 remaining put the Leopards (3-2) ahead 51-49 and they never trailed again. His basket started a 15-6 run that Penn (2-2) never recovered from.

Jaworski made 4 of 6 3s and distributed six assists. Myles Cherry scored 13 points and Tyrone Perry 12.

Devon Goodman led Penn with 15 points, AJ Brodeur scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and distributed eight assists. Bryce Washington scored 12.

Lafayette plays Fairleigh Dickinson at home on Sunday. Penn plays Providence on the road on Saturday.
