Penn State kickoff specialist Joey Julius no longer with program

Just a little over a month before the season begins, Penn State has lost a key special teams piece.

Kickoff specialist Joey Julius is no longer with the Nittany Lions, the program confirmed Monday to's Bob Flounders.

Julius, who was listed by the program at 5-foot-10, 258 pounds, made headlines not only for being a larger-than-normal-sized kicker but also for his public battle with an eating disorder. He had been treated twice for the disorder within the last year.

A graduate of Lower Dauphin High School in the greater Harrisburg area, Julius averaged 62.1 yards per kickoff and recorded 45 touchbacks last season.

Julius, who would have been a redshirt junior this season, had not practiced with the Nittany Lions during the spring.
