Former Eagles running back Kenjon Barner signs with Chargers

A former Eagles running back has found a new home.

Kenjon Barner has signed with the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year deal, the team announced Monday.

Barner, 27, became a restricted free agent after the 2016 season. The Eagles elected to not extend him a tender, which meant Barner became a free agent on March 9.

Based on his workload over the last season, it was pretty obvious that Barner wasn't in the future plans of the organization, so it isn't surprising that he won't be returning for another season in Philadelphia.

Originally drafted by the Panthers in the sixth round of the 2013 draft, Barner joined the Eagles in a trade in 2014. The move reunited him with his college coach Chip Kelly.

Barner spent most of the 2014 season on the Eagles' practice squad and was on the team in 2015 and 2016. In his two years on the Eagles' roster, he carried the ball 55 times and had an average or 4.6 yards per carry. He was also a kick returner.

With Barner gone, the only running backs left on the Eagles' roster are Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Byron Marshall, Terrell Watson and Ryan Mathews, although it still seems likely Mathews will be cut once his neck injury heals.
