Marcus Smith will become a free agent after this season.
The Eagles will not pick up the defensive end's fifth-year option by this week's deadline, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
That shouldn't be much of a shock. Smith, 25, has had a disappointing career since being taken 26th overall in the 2014 NFL draft. Smith has just four sacks in 37 career games.
Smith is set to have a salary cap hit of $2.48 million this season and would be in for a considerable raise if his option was picked up. The option figure would be the average of the third to 25th highest paid players at his position. The fifth-year option figure for defensive ends drafted from 11-32 is just over $8 million. That number will increase next year.
Option years are guaranteed for injury upon signing and become fully guaranteed on the first day of the league year (March 2018).
Smith hasn't made much of an impact since his arrival in the NFL and no the has even more competition. The Eagles just used their 14th pick in this year's draft to take another defensive end, Derek Barnett from Tennessee. In addition to Barnett, the Eagles also have Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry and Chris Long to play defensive end.
