BOX SCORE

OTTAWA, Ontario — Coming off a win in which they were outplayed by the Boston Bruins to close out November, the Flyers opened December with a win over the Senators in a game in which they were the better team for most of the night.

Claude Giroux scored his second goal of the game 40 seconds into overtime for a 3-2 win.

The win gave the Flyers their second three-game winning streak of the season.

Steve Mason made 47 saves in a 3-2 shootout win Tuesday, but Thursday it was the Flyers’ turn to face a hot netminder as Mike Condon turned aside 29 shots through three periods and overtime.

The Senators got a power-play goal from Mike Hoffman in the first period and the lead was increased to 2-0 by Ryan Dzingel in the second period.

Giroux and Micheal Del Zotto scored 60 seconds apart late in the second period to tie the game.

With the win, the Flyers (12-10-3)  are tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference. The Senators (14-8-2) sit fourth in the Eastern Conference.

Nice ring to it
While out with family in Ottawa Wednesday night, Giroux got engaged to his girlfriend and local girl, Ryanne. No date has been set but it’s a safe bet that a June wedding is out as Giroux hopes to be winning a ring during that time, not placing one on a finger.

Not road weary
The Flyers certainly aren’t suffering any jetlag as Thursday was just their third road game in 20 days.

Just weary
Thursday marked the first of 14 December games for the Flyers, eight of which are on the road.

Not so funny hop
After being knocked down with a stick, the puck bounced in front of Mason before being tapped over his shoulder by Dzingel for Ottawa’s second goal.

One to go
Giroux is one game shy of 600 for both his NHL career and with the Flyers.

Notable goals
Giroux’s sixth goal of the season revealed the first chink in Condon’s armor as it beat the Ottawa netminder between the blocker hand and the body. The goal was the first of the game for the Flyers, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Goalie report
Having faced 47 shots Tuesday, Mason must have been downright bored through the first 40 minutes Thursday as he faced just 12 shots. Unfortunately for him, two of the shots lit the red light to put the Flyers in a 2-0 hole. He finished with 19 saves.

Power play
Despite good pressure and opportunities during four power plays Thursday, the Flyers couldn’t score a man-advantage goal despite seven shots. They had scored power-play goals in their two previous games.

Penalty kill
The Flyers had to kill only two power-play opportunities (one for only 38 seconds) but were unsuccessful on one as the Senators opened the scoring with the man advantage.

Scratches
Defensemen Nick Schultz (healthy) and Brandon Manning (concussion symptoms), forwards Boyd Gordon (back spasms), Sean Couturier (left knee) and Scott Laughton (healthy) and goalie Michal Neuvirth (left knee).

Up next
The Flyers are home to face the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday afternoon before heading back on the road for a meeting with the Nashville Predators Sunday.
