SAN JOSE — As if the Flyers hadn’t had enough bad luck of late, things got worse for them Friday night at SAP Center.

Starting goalie Steve Mason left the game after one period with an apparent left hand injury. General manager Ron Hextall said Mason is "nicked up" and the team will know more Saturday.

Late in the period, San Jose’s Joe Thornton’s stick accidentally caught Mason on his stick hand coming around the net during a Sharks power play.

Wayne Simmonds jumped Thornton in a brief scrum, but again it was not intentional.

Trainer Jim McCrossin treated Mason on the ice, but when play resumed, Patrick Marleau scored off a loose rebound in the paint for the only goal in the period.

Whether the injury played a role in the goal was unknown.

Mason finished the period, but Anthony Stolarz replaced him to start the second period.

Stolarz was 2-0. This was his fourth appearance. Oddly, he was going up against fellow rookie Aaron Dell, who played for Flyers coach Dave Hakstol at North Dakota.

With Mason out, the Flyers are officially missing their starter and backup right now. Michal Neuvirth is coming off a left knee injury and hasn’t been activated yet off LTIR.
