The Phillies on Friday optioned outfielder Cody Asche to Lehigh Valley and reinstated outfielder Peter Bourjos from the 15-day DL.

Asche has struggled mightily in his last 26 games (23 starts). He has just nine hits in his last 85 at-bats (.120). The 26-year-old converted to the outfield last season after coming through the Phils' system playing second and third base. For the season, Asche is hitting .213 with four homers and 17 RBIs.

After a horrendous start, Bourjos had a monster June, batting .410 (25 of 61) for the month. He had a 14-game hitting streak snapped on July 6. He cooled off before injuring his shoulder attempting to make a catch against the wall on July 26 in Miami. Bourjos is hitting .253 with four homers and 20 RBIs overall.

With the emergence of Aaron Altherr after his return from the 60-day DL and the return of Bourjos looming, it seemed likely that journeyman Jimmy Paredes would be the odd man out. Paredes hasn't exactly set the world on fire (batting .200 with Phillies), but Asche still has minor-league options remaining.
