The Phillies lost a game and a possibly a pitcher on Thursday night. The Phils were shut out, 10-0, by the New York Mets. Three of the Mets' runs came on a first-inning home run against Vince Velasquez. The right-hander threw 32 pitches in the inning then left the game.
Mets starter Jacob deGrom continued his mastery of the Phillies. He is 6-0 in 10 career starts against the Phillies. The Mets have won all 10 of those starts.
The loss snapped the Phillies' three-game winning streak and dropped them to 42-70 on the season.
Starting pitching report
Velasquez had a start cut short by injury for the second time this season. He left after one inning with numbness in his right middle finger, according to the team. Velasquez got the first two outs of the game before giving up a double, a walk and a three-run homer.
Velasquez exited a May 30 start in Miami in the second inning and missed six weeks with an elbow strain.
deGrom pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings and gave up just four hits. He left after taking a line drive from Nick Williams off his right triceps in the seventh. deGrom walked none and struck out nine. He is 9-2 with a 1.82 ERA in his last 11 starts.

Mark Leiter Jr. was pressed into early long relief work. He pitched five innings of four-hit, one-run ball, walked none and struck out seven. On Saturday, Leiter picked up Nick Pivetta and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked none and struck out nine in that game. So, in his last two appearances, Leiter has pitched 9 1/3 innings and given up just one run while walking none and striking out 16.
Jesen Therrien gave up a three-run homer in the seventh.
At the plate
The Phillies were out-hit, 13-4. Phillies hitters struck out 13 times.
The Mets hit four homers. Wilmer Flores and Michael Conforto both hit three-run shots. Curtis Granderson smacked a two-run homer and Neil Walker a solo blow.
A promotion
The Phillies brought up Rhys Hoskins from Triple A. He started in left field, but his future still appears to be at first base (see story).
Despite limited experience in the outfield, Hoskins handled his only two chances in the field. At the plate, he struck out, grounded into a double play and walked.
Remembrance
A pregame moment of silence was observed for former Phillies great Darren Daulton, who died on Sunday. It was preceded by a touching video tribute. Daulton's No. 10 was painted into the dirt behind the catcher's box.
