WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals continued their dominance of the Phillies with a 5-4 win on Friday night.
 
Rookie Trea Turner won it for the Nats with a solo homer to dead center against Frank Herrmann with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. It was Turner’s second homer of the game.
 
The Phils trailed, 4-1, in the eighth before Cameron Rupp tied it with a booming three-run homer.
 
Washington is 43-19 against the NL East this season, including 11-5 against the Phillies.
 
The Phillies are 63-78. The have lost 12 of their last 17 games.
 
Starting pitching report
Jake Thompson racked up his third straight solid start as he gave up just two runs over 5 1/3 innings. Thompson gave up five hits, walked one and struck out five. He left trailing 2-1.
 
After debuting with four poor outings, Thompson has given up just five runs in 19 1/3 innings over three starts. The improvement has coincided with him simplifying his delivery.
 
Washington’s Tanner Roark went six innings and allowed six hits and a run. He walked two and struck out eight.
 
The right-hander has a 2.85 ERA on the season, including a mark of 0.79 in five starts against the Phillies this season.

Bullpen report
Michael Mariot stranded two runners after Thompson left in the sixth. Colton Murray allowed a two-run homer in the seventh as the Nats built a 4-1 lead. Herrmann pitched a scoreless eighth after the Phillies had tied the game. He took the loss when Turner homered in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Washington’s Koda Glover hit a batter and walked another before giving up Rupp’s game-tying homer in the eighth. Mark Melancon got the win.
 
At the plate 
Freddy Galvis drove in the Phils’ first run with a two-out single in the fourth. Rupp’s game-tying three-run homer came with one out in the eighth. It was a 420-foot bomb that cleared the Phillies’ bullpen. Rupp has 15 homers on the season.
 
The Nationals broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth when Daniel Murphy doubled and Bryce Harper singled. Both hits were against Thompson.
 
The Nats opened a 4-1 lead in the seventh on a two-run homer by Turner.
 
Health check
Odubel Herrera left the game in the fifth inning with a bruised right leg. He was hit by a pitch.
 
Maikel Franco did not start for a third straight game because of a sore right thumb. He was available for pinch-hitting duty. He remains day to day.
 
Aaron Nola’s elbow feels better, but the true test of his health won’t come until he starts throwing again. He will be evaluated on Monday (see story).
 
Up next
Jerad Eickhoff (10-13, 3.86) pitches against Washington’s Max Scherzer (16-7, 2.88) on Saturday night. Scherzer leads the majors in strikeouts with 243. He is 6-0 with a 1.98 ERA in eight starts against the Phillies as a member of the Nationals.
