The Phillies avoided arbitration with shortstop Freddy Galvis by agreeing Thursday to a one-year deal. It's worth $4.35 million, a source tells CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury.

Galvis made $2 million last season, his first of arbitration eligibility. He's arbitration-eligible again in 2018 before reaching free agency.

Galvis, who's long had terrific defensive ability but was at times inconsistent on routine plays, made big defensive strides last season. He more than halved his errors from 17 to eight. He was one of three finalists for the NL Gold Glove at shortstop, along with Brandon Crawford (who won his second) and Addison Russell.

Galvis also had a career-high 20 home runs and 67 RBIs in 2016, highly unexpected totals.

Still, his value is hampered by his low on-base percentage. Galvis hit .241 with a .274 OBP last season and owns a .279 career OBP in 1,777 plate appearances.

The Phillies have two other arbitration-eligible players: Jeanmar Gomez and Cesar Hernandez. The deadline for teams to exchange proposed salary figures with those players is Friday. They can sign at any point before the hearings, which are held in early February.
