Bryce Harper raises awareness for Australia fires with Koala Challenge

Share

Bryce Harper is busy getting ready for his first full spring training with the Phillies, and he used Thursday's workout to flex some muscle while helping a good cause.

Harper posted a video of himself at the gym Thursday, participating in the "Koala Challenge," a social media-based challenge started by Australian athlete James Newbury to raise awareness about — and money for — the victims of the ongoing Australian brush fires, and the firefighters battling the blazes.

The Koala Challenge itself looks pretty silly, and is absolutely impossible for 99.9 percent of Phillies fans, but Harper basically nailed it:

Shoutout to all the people in the background, particularly the rowing machine user on the right, who are absolutely baffled by Harper. Same, dude.

Plenty of commenters wondered how Harper climbing all over a lifting bench would actually help, but it does: Newbury partnered with fitness drink company FITAID to donate $5 to wildlife protection services in Australia each time someone posted a Koala Challenge video. Beyond his own $5, Harper spreading the challenge to his millions of Instagram followers could lead to way more entries.

Elsewhere this week, nine different NBA players — including the Sixers' Ben Simmons and Jonah Bolden, both of whom hail from Australia — donated $750,000 toward the relief and recovery efforts.

It's pretty easy to root for Philly's sports teams, and doubly so when the city's athletes are constantly using their platforms for good.

If you want to help the relief efforts but know you can't complete a Koala Challenge, you can head here to donate.
