Phillies prospect Bryson Stott is making news — good news — in his hometown of Las Vegas.
The 23-year-old shortstop led a charitable effort to give six high school student-athletes in his area something special during Christmas week. Stott’s efforts were chronicled in a local television report that was filled with smiles and good vibes. You can watch it here.
The Phillies selected Stott in the first round (14th overall) of the 2019 draft after a standout career at UNLV. Stott played in the low minors in the summer of 2019 and was part of the Phillies’ 60-man player pool during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He worked out regularly at the team’s satellite camp in Lehigh Valley but did not appear in the majors.

Baseball America recently rated Stott as the Phillies’ third-best prospect behind pitchers Spencer Howard and Mick Abel. BA calls the lefty-hitting Stott “a solid all-around player who doesn’t have many holes in his game.” He’s obviously pretty solid off the field as well.
The Phillies’ shortstop position is in flux. Didi Gregorius, who played there in 2020, has become a free agent and the Phillies could plug the position with Jean Segura, Scott Kingery or a short-term signing from outside the organization in 2021. With a good showing in the minors during the coming season, Stott could be in play for the job in 2022. It would not be surprising to see the Phillies take an advance look at Stott in big-league camp this spring.
