David Robertson giving it another go after things didn't work out with Phillies

David Robertson is giving it another go after missing most of the last two seasons because of an elbow injury.

The 35-year-old reliever plans to hold a showcase for teams in early February, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Robertson is a free agent after completing a two-year, $23 million contract with the Phillies. He was a high-profile signing in January 2019 coming off of nine straight seasons of at least 60 appearances and an eight-year span in which he posted a 2.59 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with nearly 200 more strikeouts than innings pitched.

The deal worked out disastrously. Robertson lasted just seven games for the Phillies before going down with an elbow injury that eventually required Tommy John surgery. He did not pitch last season. Both years, the Phillies’ bullpen struggled, to epic proportions in 2020.

Yet as long as Robertson shows he can still throw his cutter and breaking ball and still has OK velocity, he should find a job. Every team needs bullpen help and many will look at Robertson as a worthwhile, low-risk reclamation project.

This time around, Robertson is not representing himself as he did the offseason the Phillies signed him. He rehired agent Scott Leventhal, per MLB.com.
