Examining Rhys Hoskins' chances to win Home Run Derby

Share

Rhys Hoskins has perhaps the toughest Round 1 matchup in the Home Run Derby against 1-seed Jesus Aguilar of the Brewers, but interestingly, he has the fourth-shortest odds of the eight contestants, per Bovada.

Hoskins is 11/2 to win the Home Run Derby, tied with Freddie Freeman.

Hoskins will face Aguilar in the first round and if he advances, he'd take on the winner of the Alex Bregman-Kyle Schwarber showdown.

Aguilar has 23 home runs on the season despite not hitting his first until April 21 or his second until May 1. Since May 1, he has 22 homers in 244 plate appearances — three more than anyone in the National League.

Bryce Harper is the HRD favorite, while Bregman and Schwarber are the longshots.

Javier Baez might be the best bet, though, based on his 6/1 odds and the fact that every swing he's taken in his professional career has been preparation for this event. When Baez hits a single, it's almost by accident. He puts a home-run swing on every pitch he sees.

Bryce Harper: 11/4

Jesus Aguilar: 7/2

Max Muncy: 5/1

Rhys Hoskins: 11/2

Freddie Freeman: 11/2

Javier Baez: 6/1

Alex Bregman: 9/1

Kyle Schwarber: 9/1
