Exciting group of prospects set to represent Phillies in Arizona Fall League

A group featuring some of the Phillies' most exciting prospects is set to represent the organization in the Arizona Fall League.

Right-hander Spencer Howard and third baseman Alec Bohm — the Phillies' top pitching and hitting prospect — will play in Arizona. So will outfielder Mickey Moniak, left-hander JoJo Romero, right-hander Connor Seabold and shortstop Nick Maton.

Now, this list could be subject to change. If the Phillies choose to call up Howard in September to have him start a few games or pitch out of the bullpen, that could affect his innings total and availability for the AFL.

Howard pitches tonight for Reading as the Fightin Phils look to clinch a playoff spot. In five starts at Double A, Howard has a 2.52 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 32 strikeouts in 25 innings. Overall this season, he has a 2.07 ERA in 14 starts with 12.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

Bohm might be the Phillies' opening day third baseman next season. He's had a dynamic season, hitting .306/.376/.521 with 30 doubles, 20 homers and 76 RBI in 120 games split between Lakewood, Clearwater and Reading. Bohm's low strikeout rate sticks out. He has whiffed just 70 times in 518 plate appearances.

Moniak has hit for more power this season than the previous three but still hasn't grown into a consistent offensive threat. Keep in mind he's still only 21 years old, not 23 like Howard or Bohm. Obvious room for growth.

Romero, the Phillies' fourth-round pick in 2016, has not fared well in his first stint at Triple A, pitching to a 7.35 ERA over 12 starts.

Maton is a 22-year-old middle infielder at Double A, and Seabold is a 23-year-old pitcher who's had a promising run at Double A, mostly avoiding falling victim to the hitter-friendly pitfalls at Reading's home park.
