Before-and-after pic shows how much weight Jean Segura has dropped

It was no secret last season that Jean Segura gained weight throughout the summer. It was noticeable in his face and midsection, and whether or not it contributed to his decline in production over his final 50 games, that narrative was out there.

It's pretty difficult for an everyday shortstop to gain weight given how many calories are burnt from 3 p.m. on each game day. Players are out on the field for BP and defensive work hours before first pitch. The flipside is the many, many nights you're having meals after 11 p.m.

Segura arrived to spring training in February in much better shape. He lost 14 pounds in the offseason by cutting out whiskey, eating better and sleeping more. He also unplugged from social media, taking a break for several months.

Segura continues to firm up. He shared this telling before-and-after picture to Instagram earlier this week.

Part of that caption reads: "More than satisfied, I feel like a true athlete, before (I was) training 3 and 4 hours a day, now I train 1 and the difference is heaven to earth."

Segura is switching positions whenever this 2020 season begins. With Didi Gregorius here to play shortstop, Segura will transition to third base for the Phillies. He should also see some time at second base when Scott Kingery is resting or playing a different position.

Segura is under contract for two more years after 2020 for a total of $29.5 million guaranteed. The 2020 season will be his ninth in the majors, and the Phillies are his fifth team. He has hit .301 with a .788 OPS over the last four seasons.
