Phillies have to make the call on manager Gabe Kapler's future very soon

Noontime passed on Wednesday and still there was no verdict on Gabe Kapler.

Maybe the Phillies will say something about the future of their manager on Thursday or Friday.

It is difficult to envision the team saying anything the remainder of Wednesday because two decisive Division Series games will be played later in the day. The Cardinals and Braves play at 5 p.m., and the Dodgers and Nationals at 8:30.

Major League Baseball frowns on teams making major announcements during its signature October events and the games are about to get even bigger with the National League Championship Series starting on Friday night and the American League Championship Series commencing on Saturday.

There is also a decisive AL Division Series game between Houston and Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

So if you’re looking for a window for an announcement on whether Kapler is staying or going, it could be Thursday or Friday — early in the day before the focus turns to the action on the field.

Kapler completed his second season as Phillies manager 10 days ago. His future was cast into doubt after two in-season collapses and his work has come under the personal review of owner John Middleton (see story). Middleton’s focus is solely on Kapler and whether or not to retain him for a third season. General manager Matt Klentak and club president Andy MacPhail will remain in their positions, according to sources.
