J.T. Realmuto, who exited Sunday’s game in the fifth inning with an ankle injury, is out of the Phillies’ lineup Monday as they start a road series against the Washington Nationals.
Realmuto has been banged up all season, dealing with foul balls to the mask and injuries to his thumb, hand, right shoulder and ankle. Though his production has slipped in August and he’s gone 12 for 57 (.211) over his last 17 games, it’s a key loss for the Phillies no matter how much time Realmuto misses. On Sunday, manager Joe Girardi referred to him as day to day.
With Andrew Knapp out at least another week on the COVID injured list, the Phillies are down to one healthy catcher in Rafael Marchan. The 22-year-old Marchan gets another start behind the plate Monday, catching Zack Wheeler.
The Phillies’ emergency catcher, Luke Williams, is also on the COVID IL. Nick Maton and/or Ronald Torreyes are the current emergency catchers, until or unless the Phillies add another catcher to the 40-man roster. The next option could be 30-year-old Tyler Heineman, who is at Triple A Lehigh Valley after playing five games for the 2019 Marlins and 15 with the 2020 Giants.
With Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins (out for the season) and Didi Gregorius (paternity leave) out, the Phillies' lineup has seen better days. Here was the batting order Monday night against the Nationals and right-hander Josiah Gray:
1. Odubel Herrera, CF
2. Jean Segura, 2B
3. Bryce Harper, RF
4. Andrew McCutchen, LF
5. Brad Miller, 1B
6. Freddy Galvis, SS
7. Ronald Torreyes, 3B
8. Rafael Marchan, C
9. Zack Wheeler, P
