Phillies may have gone from having no All-Star Game starters to 2

The Phillies may have gone from having no starters in Tuesday’s All-Star Game to two.

Buster Posey, voted in as the National League’s starting catcher, was placed on the injured list Friday with a left thumb contusion.

The only other catcher on the initial NL roster was J.T. Realmuto, who is in line to start the game. Yadier Molina was named to the team in place of Posey.

Realmuto may end up catching Zack Wheeler in an all-Phillies battery to begin the All-Star Game at Coors Field. Jacob deGrom will not pitch in the game, and Kevin Gausman is slated to start Sunday for the Giants in the final game before the break. Wheeler, who last started Wednesday, is likely next in line. The first-time All-Star has a 2.26 ERA and leads the majors with 119⅔ innings.

Realmuto enters the final series of the first half hitting .261/.369/.437 in 67 games. He has not played as well as he can offensively or defensively, and the All-Star nod came at a time when he needed a little boost of confidence.

"I was very excited, especially off of the heels of one of the worst slumps of my career, so obviously I wasn't feeling too great about myself," Realmuto said Sunday. "But getting called in and (manager Joe Girardi) letting me know I was making the All-Star Game kind of gave me a lift in spirits.

"I definitely didn't play my best baseball, in my opinion, on either side of the ball. Just have to get more consistent at the plate. I've thrown myself into a pretty big slump the last three weeks or so. I just haven't felt myself. Before that, I was doing OK with the bat, but that kind of put a damper on my first half. I just need to get back to being consistent, being myself, and kind of put the first half behind me."

Starting lineups will be revealed Monday afternoon. Wheeler could very well be throwing to Realmuto to begin the top of the first inning in the 91st MLB All-Star Game.
