Phillies catching prospect Logan O'Hoppe, a standout in this year's Arizona Fall League, has been honored with the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award.
The award is named after Stenson, a former outfielder in the Reds and Red Sox organizations who was tragically murdered in Arizona during the Fall League season in 2003 after his rookie year.
According to the league, "this special honor is presented to the player who exemplifies unselfishness, hard work and leadership – much like Dernell demonstrated during his time with the Fall League. Logan exhibited these qualities during the 2021 season, opening the eyes of fans, teammates, coaches, and staff."

The 21-year-old O'Hoppe appeared in 22 games in Arizona and hit .299/.440/.519 with eight doubles, three home runs, 17 RBI, 21 walks and 15 strikeouts. Fellow Phillies prospect Bryson Stott also had a strong showing in 26 games, hitting .318 with a .934 OPS.
O'Hoppe was the Phillies' 23rd-round pick in 2018 out of St. John the Baptist HS on Long Island. He went late because of concerns that he'd opt to go to college. He spent this past season at three different minor-league levels, progressing from High A Jersey Shore to Double A Reading to Triple A Lehigh Valley by September. Altogether, he hit .270 with 17 home runs, 58 RBI and a .789 OPS.
The Phillies have made catching depth behind J.T. Realmuto a priority. They have two young backstops they like in O'Hoppe and Rafael Marchan and last week added two catchers to their 40-man roster via trade, acquiring Garrett Stubbs from the Astros and Donny Sands from the Yankees.
The 28-year-old Stubbs has 51 games of big-league experience with Houston. Sands, 25, caught at Double A and Triple A in the Yankees' system last season.
