Former Phillies reliever ends up with the Mets

Former Phillies reliever Sam Coonrod was claimed off waivers Monday by the Mets.

Coonrod was designated for assignment last week when the Phillies officially signed utilityman Josh Harrison to a one-year deal.

Coonrod spent two years with the Phillies and was re-signed earlier this offseason to a one-year, $775,000 contract. He was acquired in January 2021 from the Giants for Carson Ragsdale, a pitcher the Phillies drafted in the fourth round the prior summer. Ragsdale made 24 starts at A-ball in 2021 but missed most of 2022 recovering from thoracic outlet surgery.

Coonrod appeared in 42 games with the Phillies in 2021 and posted a 4.04 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 42⅓ innings. Arm problems caused him to miss most of the 2022 season and he appeared in just 12 games with the Phils, allowing 12 runs.

Coonrod's fastball averaged 98.0 mph in 2020 and 2021 and teams will take chances on velocity. It was down slightly to 96.8 in his abbreviated 2022.
