Might Phillies' reported deal with veteran catcher Nick Hundley mean anything for Andrew Knapp?

The Phillies have agreed to a minor-league deal with catcher Nick Hundley, a 12-year veteran of five teams, according to multiple reports Monday.

Hundley has been a serviceable backup catcher throughout his career. He is not a strong hitter but is still an offensive upgrade over Andrew Knapp if the Phillies choose to expedite his move to the big leagues. The Phils could also continue on with Knapp and call up Hundley when rosters expand in 19 days.

Hundley was the Athletics’ opening day catcher this season. He went on the injured list with back spasms the first week of June, completed a rehab assignment on July 24 and was designated for assignment three days later.

Hundley is a .247/.299/.405 career hitter with four double-digit home run seasons.

He’s hit .233/.286/.398 the last two years while Knapp has hit .196/.302/.300.

The Phillies also have 23-year-old catcher Deivy Grullon at Lehigh Valley. He has an .825 OPS in 91 games at Triple A after posting an .825 OPS in 90 games a season ago at Double A. The Phils left him unprotected in last year’s Rule 5 draft and got away with it, but they will soon need to add him to the 40-man roster or risk losing him to another organization. Grullon has power and a strong arm. His work behind the plate is developing, and plate selection has so far been a weakness.
