Odubel Herrera domestic violence charges dismissed, but MLB discipline could still come

ATLANTA – Domestic violence charges against Odubel Herrera were dropped by a New Jersey court on Wednesday, but the Phillies outfielder could still face discipline from Major League Baseball.

Herrera remains on paid administrative leave through Friday.

So, what’s next?

It’s possible that MLB could extend the leave as it continues its own ongoing investigation of the matter.

It’s possible that MLB could conclude its investigation without issuing discipline.

It’s also possible that MLB could discipline Herrera in the form of an unpaid suspension. MLB has that right as part of its joint agreement against domestic abuse with the MLB Players Association.

Herrera was cleared legally when his girlfriend refused to press charges stemming from an incident that occurred at an Atlantic City hotel on Memorial Day weekend.

Several major league players involved in similar situations have had legal charges dropped but still incurred a suspension from MLB.

Herrera has not suited up for the Phillies since the May 27 and it’s possible he will not do so for the remainder of the season, depending on the results of MLB’s own investigation.

Herrera, 27, is owed about $23.7 million through 2021. His contract cannot be voided, as part of the joint agreement between MLB and the players association. The Phillies would be on the hook for his salary if they released him.
