The Phillies got off to a strong start Thursday in Clearwater at the plate, in the field and on the mound against the Yankees.
Lefty Matt Moore threw a nine-pitch, 1-2-3 first inning, missing bats with his fastball, changeup and breaking ball. He allowed a hit and a walk and struck out two in his two innings.
Scott Kingery launched a home run to left field in his first at-bat, and Odubel Herrera followed with a homer to right field the next inning. Rhys Hoskins also just missed one, flying out deep to left-center field in his first game of the spring.

Herrera also started a nice play in the field, chasing down a ball in the right-field corner and connecting with second baseman Nick Maton for a relay play at the plate to nail Kyle Higashioka.
“It looked like he ran into the wall pretty hard, I was worried he got hurt,” manager Joe Girardi said of Herrera during an in-game interview. “But he sacrificed his body. If the play gets to the corner, it’s an easy run. Just a perfect play. All-around good play by three different players.”
Herrera singled to the opposite field in his second at-bat. Later in the inning, Maton cleared the bases with a three-run double. Alec Bohm later added a three-run-homer.
