Phillies cross fingers that X-rays of Bryce Harper's ankle come back clean

Bryce Harper has missed time this season with assorted nagging injuries.

Did he suffer another one Wednesday night?

The Phillies hope not.

“We’ll take some precautionary X-rays,” manager Joe Girardi said.

Harper, who served as the designated hitter in Wednesday night’s 6-5 loss to the Yankees, fouled a ball off his right ankle in the eighth inning. The ball struck him where the top of the foot meets the ankle and he was clearly in pain as he limped around the home plate area.

Harper was tended to by Girardi and a team athletic trainer. He stayed in the game and drew a walk. Girardi said Harper would have batted if his spot in the order had come up again. It did not.

Earlier in the game, Harper had an RBI double.

Losing Harper for any amount of time would be a blow. He entered Wednesday night’s game hitting .333 with a .955 OPS, two homers and 10 RBIs in his previous 13 games.

The Phillies open an eight-game homestand Thursday night with the first of four against the Atlanta Braves. The Phils are in second place in the NL East, 3 ½ games behind the New York Mets. The Braves are just a game behind the Phillies and 4 ½ behind the Mets.

Harper has battled nagging injuries to his wrist, back and shoulder this season.
