Gregorius placed on IL, Stott back with Phillies

The Phillies placed shortstop Didi Gregorius on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a left knee sprain, retroactive to May 5.

Bryson Stott was called up from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take his place on the roster.

Stott had been optioned to Triple A on April 25 after not playing for nearly a week. He had been in a slump at the plate as Alec Bohm was solidifying his spot at third base, and with Gregorius and Johan Camargo in the picture at shortstop, there wasn’t enough regular playing time for the 24-year-old Stott. He made eight starts before being sent down — four at second base, two at third base and two at shortstop.

Stott responded well with Lehigh Valley, going 12 for 36 (.333) with two doubles, a triple and two home runs.

Gregorius has started 17 of the Phillies’ 26 games at shortstop and hit .288/.338/.356. He hasn’t been hitting the ball nearly as hard as he did in the shortened 2020 season, a stretch that earned him a two-year deal from the Phillies. Gregorius this season ranks in the bottom one percent of major-leaguers in exit velocity and the bottom two percent in hard-hit rate.

Stott is in the lineup on a rainy Saturday against Mets right-hander Max Scherzer. Stott had a multi-hit game against him the first week of the season.

Nick Castellanos was also back in the lineup after being hit by a pitch and exiting Thursday’s game with a bruised right wrist.
