Phillies first-round draft pick Bryson Stott off to hot start in minors

Looking for a bat to help the Phillies this season? Well, 2019 first-round pick Bryson Stott isn’t it, but he’s off to a nice start to his professional career.

Selected with the 14th overall pick this year, Stott surely doesn’t project to make it to Philadelphia for quite some time, but he’s already moving up the ranks of the Phillies' minor-league system after just about a week.

His career started off with a bang.

In fact, he reached base safely in his first five professional plate appearances.

All told, Stott went 5 for 8 with the Gulf Coast League Phillies with two walks, a homer and a triple, which warranted a move to Single A Williamsport.

The plan was probably always for the 21-year-old to play in Williamsport this season, but I’m impressed with how Stott was able to pick up the bat after a significant amount of time off after his college season at UNLV and start hitting again.

As a college-aged player, Stott could be on a similar path as Adam Haseley, who made his MLB debut this season after being drafted in 2017. With any success, they might try to get Stott some at-bats in Single A Lakewood this season before opening next year’s campaign in Clearwater.

A shortstop by trade, Stott would probably prefer to stay there, but he can play other positions as well. With Jean Segura committed $14,850,000 each of the next three seasons, the hope would probably be for Stott to see the big leagues in 2022 in a similar role as Scott Kingery had last season before forcing his way into the infield and giving the team a decision to make in 2023 on Segura’s $17 million team option.

For now, let’s see how the kid hits and hope he continues his hot start.
