Gabe Kapler’s status as Phillies manager continues to hang uncomfortably in the air and likely will continue to do so through the weekend, a person with knowledge of the situation told NBC Sports Philadelphia on Thursday evening.
It has been clear for some time that Kapler’s future is in the hands of owner John Middleton.
According to sources, Middleton has spent much time over the past week seeking opinions on whether Kapler is the right man to lead the Phillies in 2020. Middleton is a methodical decision maker and it appears that he is not done gathering the information he needs to make the best decision for the franchise.
There has been speculation that Middleton is pondering widespread management changes in the organization. However, his focus seems to be on the manager's job only.
Kapler completed his second season on the job Sunday. His record as Phillies manager is 161-163.
Even with his future being debated in headlines and on the airwaves, Kapler has continued to report to Citizens Bank Park for work this week.
Seven teams have so far dismissed their managers. The Mets became the latest team to do so on Thursday.
