Phillies to hire Manny Machado's mentor, Bobby Dickerson, from Baltimore

The Phillies are on the verge of adding Bobby Dickerson to a position on their major-league coaching staff, said a person with knowledge of the situation, confirming an initial report by MASNsports.com.

Dickerson spent the last six seasons as third base coach and infield guru for the Baltimore Orioles and is very close with Manny Machado, the former Oriole and current free-agent target of the Phillies. In addition to the Phillies, Machado is being pursued by the White Sox and the Yankees have also shown interest. Ultimately, money is going to determine where Machado ends up, but it can't hurt the Phillies' chances to have his mentor on their staff.

The Phillies recently lost first base/infield coach Jose David Flores to Baltimore as the Orioles were able to offer him a position covered by the big-league pension plan. Though plans have not been announced, Dickerson could seamlessly slide into Flores' former role with the Phillies. The hire is expected to be announced in the coming days.

The Phillies remain in talks with Machado. They are also eyeing free agent Bryce Harper and will meet with him and his agent, Scott Boras, in Las Vegas on Saturday.
