Phillies without both middle infielders as Segura hits the IL

The Phillies are without both of their starting middle infielders for their Wednesday afternoon series finale against the Giants.

Jean Segura is out after straining his right quad in Tuesday's dispiriting loss. He had an MRI Wednesday morning and was promptly placed on the 10-day IL. He’s been very good offensively for the Phillies, hitting .333 and moved from seventh to second in Tuesday's game. This will be a noticeable loss.

The Phillies called up Scott Kingery to take Segura's place on the active roster. They also called up right-hander Spencer Howard and sent Ramon Rosso to the alternate site at Lehigh Valley.

Didi Gregorius missed his third straight game with inflammation in his right elbow. Manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday night that the hope was that if Gregorius was unable to go Wednesday, that he’d play Friday at Coors Field.

Nick Maton has started at shortstop for Gregorius two games in a row and gone 2 for 8 with a double and an RBI. He’s there again, batting seventh.

Brad Miller gets the start at second base after hitting a three-run shot Tuesday, his first homer of the season.

J.T. Realmuto, who has started 14 of the Phillies’ 17 games and appeared in all 17, sits.
