The Phillies, who have fallen off the National League playoff grid, will look to break a four-game losing streak Wednesday night against the Washington Nationals with this lineup:
- Andrew McCutchen LF
- Alec Bohm 3B
- Bryce Harper DH
- J.T. Realmuto 1B
- Didi Gregorius SS
- Jean Segura 2B
- Jay Bruce RF
- Andrew Knapp C
- Scott Kingery CF
Zach Eflin is the starting pitcher against Washington’s Erick Fedde.
Harper, who has been plagued by a bad back for several weeks, according to manager Joe Girardi, is 0 for 13 with six strikeouts in the last four games. He had some trouble in the outfield in Tuesday’s doubleheader and will serve as the DH Wednesday night. Realmuto is in the lineup for a third straight game at a third different position – first base. He caught the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader and was the DH in the second game. He had previously missed 11 straight games with a hip injury.
The Phils are two games under .500 and no longer control their own playoff destiny. They need to win games in a hurry and hope for outside help to make the eight-team playoff field.
On Wednesday afternoon, Girardi essentially acknowledged that the club needed to win its final four games to make the postseason.
“But first we need to win tonight,” he said.
