Phillies rained out Monday, facing a schedule crunch

Monday’s Phillies-Mets game at Citi Field was postponed because of rain and will be made up Tuesday as part of a doubleheader beginning at 4:10 p.m.

As with all doubleheaders since the start of 2020, both games will be seven innings.

Game 2 will start approximately 30 minutes after Game 1 but no earlier than 7:10 p.m.

The Phillies will start Chase Anderson in Game 1 and Aaron Nola in Game 2. The Mets were slated to begin the series with lefty David Peterson, then Taijuan Walker.

The Phillies may have to turn to Vince Velasquez for a start later in the week because with the doubleheader, Anderson would be on short rest when his turn in the rotation comes up again Saturday. A caveat is that there is currently a 100% chance of rain Thursday afternoon for the series finale. No game Thursday would mean no need for a sixth starter this week, plus the Phillies would avoid Jacob deGrom. We shall see.

The Mets were also rained out Sunday after playing one-third of an inning. Through the season’s first 12 days, the Mets have played just five games to the Phillies’ nine. Their opening series was postponed when several Nationals players tested positive for COVID-19.

With this rainout, the Phillies will now play 27 games in 27 days starting Tuesday. Their only day off between April 13 and May 9 is next Thursday, April 22.
