Phils' minor-league shakeup continues, candidates to lead department emerge

As the Phillies’ big-league club enters the final two weeks of a playoff chase, the minor-league operation continues to move toward a re-shaping.

Team officials are in the process of interviewing candidates to lead the department after a shakeup last month. That shakeup continued this week when minor-league field coordinator Chris Truby was let go after three years in that position and 13 on the player-development staff.

Truby played in the majors with Houston, Montreal, Detroit and Tampa Bay. During his time in player development with the Phillies, he served as an infield coordinator and a manager. He is the third high-ranking member of the player-development system to be removed from his role in the last month. Previously, the club removed Bryan Minniti, the assistant general manager who oversaw scouting and player development, and Josh Bonifay, the director of player development, from their roles. The team announced that Minniti would stay on as a consultant through 2022. Bonifay is now working on the team’s professional scouting staff.

In announcing the changes in player development last month, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said he thought there “weren’t enough people on the same page” in the department.

“We’re going to hire someone to align the department for us,” he added.

Dombrowski said the ideal candidate would be one who could balance traditional player-development methods with contemporary approaches.

Dombrowski and his staff have interviewed several in-house candidates for the job. The list includes Rob Segedin, the team’s director of integrated baseball performance; Josh Lipman, the coordinator of integrated baseball performance; and Dana Parks, the assistant director player development.

The only known outside candidate is Del Matthews, who interviewed earlier this week. He is the senior director of baseball development for Major League Baseball and former assistant director of player development and scouting for the Chicago White Sox. Matthews played in the Milwaukee Brewers system. He is the son of former Phillie Gary Matthews.
