Phillies send down Edubray Ramos; Victor Arano recalled

Update: Pitcher Victor Arano has been recalled.

The Phillies have altered their opening day roster for the first time this regular season, optioning right-handed reliever Edubray Ramos to Triple A Lehigh Valley.

A corresponding roster move will be made prior to Friday’s game in Miami against a Marlins team that was outscored 21-1 by the Reds the last three days.

The activation of Roman Quinn is a possibility but seems more likely to occur next week. The promotion of another reliever would fit with the Phillies’ preference to carry eight relievers.

Candidates include:

• Victor Arano, who has pitched four scoreless innings at Triple A, allowing one baserunner and striking out seven.

• Edgar Garcia, an interesting right-handed relief prospect with a good slider.

• Lefties James Pazos and Austin Davis, who are both at Triple A.

All four are on the Phillies’ 40-man roster.

We’ll see tomorrow.

Phillies' Scott Kingery exits game with hamstring injury

DENVER — Scott Kingery left Friday night’s game against Colorado with a right hamstring injury.

Kingery grabbed his hamstring while running out a ground ball in the fourth inning.

He was in the midst of his third straight start at shortstop, filling in for Jean Segura who, coincidentally, was out of the lineup with a hamstring injury.

Odubel Herrera is also out with a hamstring injury.

Phil Gosselin, the former Malvern Prep and University of Virginia star, made his Phillies’ debut and took over at shortstop for the Phillies after Kingery exited. Gosselin is a West Chester native.

Segura is not on the injured list. He was tentatively scheduled to return on Sunday. He could be pressed into duty on Saturday night.

Kingery left the field with athletic trainer Scott Sheridan by his side.

Kingery had been swinging a hot bat and was looking at getting more playing time (see story).

More later.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit Bryce Harper jerseys, issues warning

U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit Bryce Harper jerseys, issues warning

Busted.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Philadelphia have announced they’ve seized 314 counterfeit Bryce Harper jerseys, which, if sold at their full price, would total more than $44,000. Let’s be real, though, these were probably listed for $20 apiece online.

The press release says that six shipments of Harper — or perhaps a few said Haprer or Harpr —  jerseys were en route from Hong Kong to addresses in the tri-state area.

Am I shocked? Of course not. Harper jerseys are the hottest item in Philadelphia fashion this spring and were bought, legally, in record numbers when the then-free agent signed his mega contract. There are, however, a few things to consider here.

The first, which I actually didn’t know, is that the CBP warns against “dangerously flammable textiles” being used in counterfeit jerseys. That’s kind of a surprise and perhaps cause for concern.

The other is that Harper signed a 13-year deal, so a nice, legitimate jersey is actually a decent investment over a jersey that looks OK but may fall apart after a few spins in the washing machine. You want something to stand the test of time, that you can wear for more than a decade, so spending money up front on a jersey for a guy that’ll be here for a while isn’t actually a bad idea.

If you’re reading this and the tracking on your Harper jersey suddenly stopped, you might be out of luck. If you’re reading this and you’ve already bought a counterfeit jersey, stay clear of the grill this summer.
