Phillies get a power arm back in time for final series

Rookie right-hander Spencer Howard is back from the injured list, providing the Phillies an additional power arm out of the bullpen for their final series of the regular season.

Howard missed two starts with shoulder stiffness. He exited his last outing in Miami on September 12 and was placed on the IL a day later, missing starts against the Mets and Nationals.

The Phillies’ rotation this weekend is Vince Velasquez Friday, Zack Wheeler Saturday and Aaron Nola Sunday. Howard could provide insurance tonight if Velasquez has a short outing.

The Phillies also recalled lefty Ranger Suarez from the alternate site and optioned rookie outfielder Mickey Moniak to Lehigh Valley. Ramon Rosso was optioned Thursday night.

Here is the Phillies’ lineup for their series opener in Tampa Bay against Charlie Morton:

  • 1. Andrew McCutchen LF
  • 2. Alec Bohm 3B
  • 3. Bryce Harper DH
  • 4. J.T. Realmuto 1B
  • 5. Didi Gregorius SS
  • 6. Jean Segura 2B
  • 7. Jay Bruce RF
  • 8. Andrew Knapp C
  • 9. Scott Kingery CF
  • Vince Velasquez SP
